| Beth Israel Cares |
Personal service and volunteerism are significant ways we can act on the mandate of TIKKUN OLAM - repairing the world. You can be a vital force for caring and community building. Being a volunteer in service to the community adds warmth, meaning, and vitality to people's lives. Please consider participating in any of the following initiatives:
Collections for Hannah More Shelter
We continue to collect all new toiletries, especially SOAP, as well as (gently used) single sheets, blankets and pillows. We are also now collecting clothes in very good condition that should be placed in closed garbages bags and put in the coat room of the synagogue. Clothes should be either casual or dressy casual. Clothes for children, men and women will be accepted, such as shirts, pants, sweaters, jackets and suits. Shoes only if they atre in excellent condition. NO undergarments.
Join members of the congregation for their monthly get together in the Sandtown section of Baltimore at Habitat for Humanity. We meet at Beth Israel at 8 AM on the first Thursday of each month and car pool down to the city. The dates for upcoming months are:
April 8
May 6
June 10
July 1
August 12
September 2
October 7
November 4
December 2
No particular construction experience is required, just a will to help. Habitat for Humanity is a world wide non profit (habitat.org) that has helped over 300,000 people own their own home. Each recipient invests with 400 hours of sweat equity and finances their purchase through a mortgage. Turn this into a family event. Young children under 18 need a parent approval (sandtownhabitat.org) and under 16 may not work on a building site, but can work in the warehouse.
Why not help others with your wonderful cooking? It's easy to provide meals to temporary residence at Hackerman-Patz House. If you're interested in providing home cooked, nourishing meals to others during difficult times, please contact Cindy Goldstein at jcdjs@aol.com to find out more information.
Bingo
Join Beth Israel members for a fun, exciting night of Bingo at Weinberg Park, the 2nd Tuesday of EVERY month from 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM.
For information about becoming a Bingo volunteer, please contact Renee Stadd at 410-363-4409 or Lois Wolf at 410-653-9145.
We can't wait to see you there!
Ronald McDonald House
Our long standing commitment to serving dinners at the Hopkins/Ronald McDonald house on Sunday nights continues. It's a great opportunity for a family mitzvah for children 10 and older. WE NEED MORE PARTICIPANTS! Only a few hours once a year or once a month - you can make a difference...
Ronald McDonald House is located at 635 W. Lexington Street and is easy to get there, parking is free. The cost of the meal is born by the volunteer however it should be tax deductible. Some help from Beth Israel Cares is available if necessary. Dinner is served at 6:00 PM and it takes about one hour to prepare (more if all cooking is done there) There are usually 20-30 people to be served.

Opening the Siddur with Rabbi Neely
Please turn to page...Is that the only way to navigate through the siddur? Does it seem like a closed book to you? Does the wall of Hebrew make it hard to reach out to pray? Jewish prayer is not meant to be mysterious even though it connects us to the ultimate mystery. This mini-series can help you get more out of prayer in the synagogue and at home, in Hebrew or English. We'll discuss techniques to help tefillah (prayer) work for us. We'll uncover some of the hidden threads and themes of the siddur.
