Pidyon Shvuyim: Redemption of Captives

Alan Gross, a resident of Potomac Maryland and former member of Beth Israel, is being detained in a Cuban jail for distributing laptop computers and cell phones to the Jewish community in Havana on behalf of the USAID program. Fortunately, he has not yet been charged with a crime, but the Cuban government claims that he is a spy for the United States. He has been in prison since December 3rd, and the State Department has been unsuccessful in securing his release.

In addition to your prayers, there are two things you can do to help. First, send a letter to your various Senators and Representatives. Follow this link for the contact information for your representatives.

Second, Chris Van Hollen is working on a bipartisan letter to the Cuban government seekign Alan's release. We are hoping to get as many members of Congress to sign the letter as possible. Please urge your Congressmen and women to sign the letter so that we can send a clear message to the Cuban government. To contact Chris Van Hollen's office

Letter to Congress

Dear Senator/ Congressman/woman,

This past week a letter has circulated through the House and Senate asking Congress to assist in the release of Alan Gross, a resident of Potomac, MD who was arrested on December 3, 2009 by Cuban authorities.  Mr. Gross was in Cuba under a UNSAID contract to help the small Jewish Community improve communications with Jews in Cuba and overseas.

Alan Gross is a humanitarian, actively involved in Jewish causes, and has worked in over 50 countries to help improve the lives of the impoverished and jumpstarting their local economies.

In recent weeks Mr.. Gross's health has started to decline.  In addition, he has lost 52 pounds in three months.

As your constituent, I urge you to please sign on to the letter to The Cuban Government, and do whatever you can to secure the release of Alan Gross.

Sincerely,

Beth Israel Cares

Personal service and volunteerism are significant ways we can act on the mandate of TIKKUN OLAM - repairing the world.  You can be a vital force for caring and community building.  Being a volunteer in service to the community adds warmth, meaning, and vitality to people's lives.  Please consider participating in any of the following initiatives:

Collections for Hannah More Shelter
We continue to collect all new toiletries, especially SOAP, as well as (gently used) single sheets, blankets and pillows. We are also now collecting clothes in very good condition that should be placed in closed garbages bags and put in the coat room of the synagogue. Clothes should be either casual or dressy casual. Clothes for children, men and women will be accepted, such as shirts, pants, sweaters, jackets and suits. Shoes only if they atre in excellent condition. NO undergarments.

Habitat for Humanity
Join members of the congregation for their monthly get together in the Sandtown section of Baltimore at Habitat for Humanity. We meet at Beth Israel at 8 AM on the first Thursday of each month and car pool down to the city. The dates for upcoming months are:

April 8

June 10

No particular construction experience is required, just a will to help. Habitat for Humanity is a world wide non profit (habitat.org) that has helped over 300,000 people own their own home. Each recipient invests with 400 hours of sweat equity and finances their purchase through a mortgage. Turn this into a family event. Young children under 18 need a parent approval (sandtownhabitat.org) and under 16 may not work on a building site, but can work in the warehouse.

Ronald McDonald House is located at 635 W. Lexington Street and is easy to get there, parking is free. The cost of the meal is born by the volunteer however it should be tax deductible. Some help from Beth Israel Cares is available if necessary. Dinner is served at 6:00 PM and it takes about one hour to prepare (more if all cooking is done there) There are usually 20-30 people to be served.
