Beth Israel Congregation in Owings Mills presents "Celebrating Jews in the Arts," a three-part series this November devoted to the vibrant legacy and ongoing influence of Jewish creativity. Hosted by distinguished experts, each event showcases how Jewish artists and performers have shaped music, visual arts, and comedy across generations.
11/3: “My Journey with Jewish Music", Professor Alexander Fiterstein
The series opens November 3, 2025 at Beth Israel Congregation at 7 p.m. with acclaimed clarinetist Professor Alexander Fiterstein, Chair of Winds at the Peabody Institute. Fiterstein introduces audiences to Klezmer music—a genre deeply rooted in Jewish tradition. His presentation and live performance reveal how Jewish music continues to inspire today’s classical landscape, celebrating history, identity, and cultural fusion.
11/10: “Defying the Stereotype: Jews and the Making of Modern Art”, Dr. Ori Z. Soltes
On November 10, 2025 at 7 p.m., art historian Dr. Ori Z. Soltes explores Jewish innovation in the visual arts over the past 150 years, from Moritz Oppenheim to Anish Kapoor. This image-rich engaging talk highlights how Jews have helped shape modern and contemporary art, breaking boundaries and redefining creativity. Key works by both renowned and lesser-known artists will be discussed, offering a comprehensive view of Jewish influence across genres and movements.
11/17: “Would the Marx Bros Get a Movie Deal Today? Critical Reflections on American Jewish Comedy in the 21st Century”, Dr. Eric Zakim
The series concludes November 17, 2025 at 7 p.m. with Dr. Eric Zakim, Professor of Film and Cinema, examining American Jewish comedy. From the Marx Brothers to today’s top talent, Dr. Zakim explores humor as social critique and cultural celebration, showing how Jewish comedians have forged new creative possibilities and left an indelible mark on entertainment.
