Lt. Colonel Sheldon Goldberg, Ph.D., USAF (Ret) is a thirty-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served five years as an enlisted airman before being accepted to Officer Candidate School and receiving his commission in 1961. He became a navigator flying transports and later, a weapons systems officer, flying both the F-4 Phantom and the F-111 Aardvark fighters, accumulating more than 5,000 total flying hours. Assigned to Southeast Asia and the only night-dedicated fighter squadron in the Air Force, he flew 214 combat missions, receiving Two Distinguished Flying Crosses for Valor and seventeen Air Medals.

Colonel Goldberg spent half his career in Europe, serving in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and twice in what was then West Germany, the latter assignment as the USAF Advisor to the Commandant, German General Staff College. Upon his return to the United States, he was assigned to Maxwell AFB AL, where he served on the faculties of both the Air Command and Staff College and the School of Associate Programs, Air War College. He retired from the Air Force on 1 August 1985.

Following his retirement, Col began a 16-year career in the Central Intelligence Agency, retiring in May 2002. He then went back to school and in May 2012, earned a Doctorate in Modern European History from the University of Maryland. His dissertation on the rearmament of West Germany after World War II was published in 2017 by Ohio University Press as From Disarmament to Rearmament: The Reversal of US Policy Toward West Germany, 1946–1955. He was also the technical editor and wrote the Foreword to Jewish Aviators in World War II by Bruce Wolk.

Colonel Goldberg is active and an officer in several veterans’ organizations, to include the Jewish War Veterans of the United States, the Military Order of the World Wars, the Wilbur Wright National Capital Region Chapter of the Distinguished Flying Cross Society, the Military Officers Association of America, and the Red River Valley Fighter Pilots Association.

Col Goldberg's personal decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross w/1 OLC, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal w/2 OLC's, Air Medal w/16 OLC's, Air Force Commendation Medal w/1 OLC, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award w/3 OLC's and Combat "V", Combat Readiness Medal w/1 OLC, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/8 Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, and the Republic of Vietnam Service Medal.  He also holds the Career Commendation Medal from the CIA and the German Military Achievement Award in Gold.
